4 Types Of Business Card Finishes

A business card has more power than you think. It contains pertinent information that is crucial for your business. And when designed properly and creatively, it can even be a conversation starter.

That’s why the finishing of a business card is also important. And you pretty much have several options on how your card would look like.

1. Matte

Matte is the norm or the standard coat of most basic business cards. It makes up for a clean and sleek finish. You can also mix it with other finishes to make a unique calling card.

Matte has a protective layer that makes it more durable and resistant to fading. However, this can render the card more amenable to fingerprints.

Also, matte makes it nearly impossible to write on the surface.  So if you tend to scribble additional notes on your calling card, this may not be for you.

2. Varnish or Spot UV

Spot UV enables an item on a business card to stand out. It can be your brand name or company logo.

This also makes any calling card look more modern and updated. Spot UV also adds a nice sheen to the card. But the back will not be recessed so you can still get to write on the surface.

3. Embossed or Debossed

Embossed makes an element on the card pop out, whereas the opposite is with debossed cards.  This is done to put emphasis on a word or highlight a name or logo on the card.

But unlike spot UV, this doesn’t add any, but instead adds texture to the card.  The cards will have a 3D look and feel to them.

The downside is, that the back part of the card may be recessed so you will not be able to scribble on it.  If you don’t want the surface to be too recessed, letterpress is an alternative. This adds pop out of a box element by adding only a little pressure. So it will not be as elevated.

4. Foil Stamped

An aluminum foil, much like what is used in the kitchen, will be heat pressed on the card until it sticks.  It is often done for logos and brand names. The foil can be black, gold, silver, copper or any other color.

This is an elegant touch to any business card and can make it look premium.  But of course,  it doesn’t come cheap.
