Giddy about how Taeyong from NCT dropped a smirk while dancing? How about that sudden surge to edit your pictures with BTS members like V or Jimin after an MV release? Perhaps, you already memorized Baekhyun and Suho’s (EXO) ideal type?
If you ticked off all those boxes, you’re definitely part of the Kpop fandom in the Philippines. We are a different breed as much as we can appreciate a good music video, a fantastic stage presence, and wonderful performances.
But there are certain things that only you would understand. So here are seven things only K-pop fans in the Philippines can relate to.
1 . Proper way of holding official kpop photo cards
The love for every group is there, but if you hold on to the official photo card of BTS without care, you’ll see that people around you may turn up their noses.
Right: Hold gently, and avoid touching the surface portion.
2 . OTPs are real
It’s like a physical manifestation of your true love for your fave biases. Fans cheer for their ‘OTPs’ (one true pairing), like Joy of Red Velvet and Sungjae of BTOB, who appeared in a romantic TV show “We Got Married.”
3. Marathon of MV Behind-the-Scenes
The Kpop fandom is not just about the group’s performances. True fans get extra hyped when they see behind the scenes footage after acquiring the group’s latest official music video. They scour online for any news and gather their chats about sets or special activities.
The feels just got real when you see the cuteness and bromance of your bias in BTS’ Run MV. You decide to watch every video, but you’re astounded because you missed some details, such as Jungkook’s smirk.
4 . The feels on each comeback
It’s almost a tradition to feel the emotions on each comeback: happy, sad, indignant, guilty, and even hopeless. The Kpop fandom is very passionate about how they support every group.
5. Watching IG, YouTube and TikTok Live at 12 AM
The Philippine time zone is 1 hour earlier than South Korea’s, so you may get confused about the time difference. But, it’s like a whole new level of fans with their insane dedication to the fandom. Those sleepless nights have inspired other fans to watch live events on IG, YouTube or TikTok.
6 . Being a “real” fan
You can prove that you’re a real fan by the amount of merchandise you have. Whether it’s official, unofficial or bootleg merchandise, all your money can be traced to Kpop idols.
7. You’re only a fan if you dance along with their MVs
Well, of course, you listen to the music, but some fans dance along with their groups’ music videos. It also gives you the chance to feel their songs in a unique way.
8. “Aigoo” is the only feasible answer
You’re definitely a big KPop fan if your response to life’s simple questions is: “Aigoo,” a Korean word for “Oh my god!” or “Geez.” This is just one of many words Filipinos have learned from their obsession with Korean culture.
Wrap Up
Be it KPOP or any other fandom, the passion and love of the fandom are not just about the group’s music and performances but also about being part of a group. It’s about being part of a family and being with your friends for the rest of your lives. It’s about feeling the love and pride for your biases.
